Summary

11 hours, 30 minutes

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner comes a harrowing new Frankie Elkin is an expert at finding the missing persons that the rest of the world has forgotten, but even she couldn’t have anticipated this latest request—to locate the long-lost sister of a female serial killer facing execution in three weeks’ time。

No man truly fears a woman。 Not even one who is her father’s daughter。

The case was sensational。 Kaylee Pierson had confessed from the very beginning, waived all appeals。 She had called herself “death,” but people called her the devil。 Despite the media’s chronicling of her tragic circumstances—the childhood spent with a violent father—no one could find sympathy for “the Beautiful Butcher” who had led eighteen men home from bars before viciously slitting their throats。

Now, with only twenty-one days left to live, Pierson has finally received a lead on the whereabouts of the sister who was kidnapped over a decade ago, and she needs Frankie’s help to find her。 The Beautiful Butcher’s offer:

When was the last time your search ended with finding the living?

Unable to resist the chance for a rescue, Frankie takes on Pierson’s request。 Twelve years ago, five-year old Leilani went missing in Hawaii。 The main suspect? Pierson’s tech mogul ex-boyfriend, Sanders MacManus。 Now, on a remote island in the middle of the Pacific—the site of MacManus’s latest vanity project—fresh evidence has appeared。 In order to learn the truth and possibly save a young woman’s life, Frankie must go undercover at the isolated base camp。 Her A dozen strangers。 Countless dangerous secrets。 Zero means of calling for help。 And then the storm rolls in…

Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for a copy of this arc。 The start of this book is very interesting。 Frankie is asked by a death row inmate to help find her missing sister。 Frankie heads to a remote island near Hawaii。 I loved the destination。 I had to stop reading a few times to look up these giant crabs they keep talking about。 Yikes they are real。 When a character is following leads to a very remote location you just know that nothing good can come of it。 I liked the storyline and act Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for a copy of this arc。 The start of this book is very interesting。 Frankie is asked by a death row inmate to help find her missing sister。 Frankie heads to a remote island near Hawaii。 I loved the destination。 I had to stop reading a few times to look up these giant crabs they keep talking about。 Yikes they are real。 When a character is following leads to a very remote location you just know that nothing good can come of it。 I liked the storyline and action towards the end of the book。 I did feel that the book was a little predictable but I still enjoyed it。 。。。more

3。5 stars! This book started off super good, and I enjoyed most of it。 It got a little slow near the ending and I felt like it was drawn out a little more than needed。 I enjoyed reading about Hawaii and the coconut crabs are things out of nightmares。 Overall 3。5 star read for me。

I was not impressed。 It seems as though Frankie, instead of growing and evolving, digressed to an idiot? As a result, I labored through this installment。 Lisa Gardner, writes with a flair and particular style that is usually engrossing, engaging, and exciting, however, it was lacking here。 The premises of this installment was grand, the reason I requested it; Keahi Pierson, AKA, “The Beautiful Butcher,” is on death row for multiple murders (particularly vicious) murders, and has her lawyer hire Frankie to find her little sister。 It is believed her little sister was kidnapped and is being held on a private and vey isolated island。 Frankie, being Frankie, goes undercover to solve the case。 There aren’t many worthy plot twists here。 I didn’t even like Frankie, this tie, around。 It’s like I mentioned before, for someone who is self reliant, and smart, she is rather dumb here。 The only interesting character is the serial killer。 I will say that。 I will continue to read Lisa Gardner, and this series。 I am just hoping the next installment brings Frankie back to being an intelligent, and perceptive individual。Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for an eARC in exchange for an honest review。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more

Frankie Elkin is an unusual woman。 A recovering alcoholic, who feels guilty that her addiction caused the death of a man she loved。 She has a need to atone for her past that drives her to look for missing people。 She doesn’t live anywhere in particular, moving around from one case to the next。In this third episode, Frankie has travelled overnight by bus to Gatesville Texas to a jail for female death row prisoners。 She is there to meet Keahi Pierson, a serial killer nicknamed ‘the Beautiful Butch Frankie Elkin is an unusual woman。 A recovering alcoholic, who feels guilty that her addiction caused the death of a man she loved。 She has a need to atone for her past that drives her to look for missing people。 She doesn’t live anywhere in particular, moving around from one case to the next。In this third episode, Frankie has travelled overnight by bus to Gatesville Texas to a jail for female death row prisoners。 She is there to meet Keahi Pierson, a serial killer nicknamed ‘the Beautiful Butcher’, for luring eighteen men to her home before killing and dismembering them and then feeding them to her pigs。 In her thirties, Keahi is beautiful with long dark hair and a golden skin that is testament to her Hawaiian heritage。 She is not repentant and wants to die, but before her execution in twenty one days, she wants Frankie to find her missing sister Lea。When she turned eighteen, Keahi took four year old Lea from their abusive father and ran away to relatives in Hawaii。 Unfortunately, she fell in love with Sanders MacManus, another abusive man, who would fight violently with her。 One day she woke up in the hospital to find Lea gone and MacManus claiming she had run away。 Unable to find any trace of her, she eventually returned to Texas and began her killing spree。 However, recently receiving a letter from Lea, she now wants to know that she is safe。To get close to MacManus and find out if he has Lea, Frankie takes a job as a housekeeper on Pomaikai, a small atoll near Honolulu, that MacManus, now a tech billionaire, bought to develop into an ecolodge。 He visits regularly, so as a housekeeper, Frankie will be able to get close to him and look for Lea。 In her afterword, Lisa Gardner describes how she came to base her fictional island on Palmyra, an atoll she visited during a writing sabbatical。 What she describes is an amazing place, wild and beautiful, inhabited by large land crabs, wolf spiders and exotic birds in a lush, dense rainforest。 Hot and humid and subject to tropical storms, Pomaikai’s isolation means it has to be self-sufficient in terms of water and electricity with food flown in regularly。 The staff are composed of a mix of kitchen and cleaning staff, a scientist, an architect, an engineer to keep everything running and a project manager。 While the first half of the book sets the scene, fleshing out the characters and some troubling incidents of sabotage, it’s like the calm before the storm with all hell about to break loose after MacManus arrives, just ahead of a tropical storm that cuts them off from outside communication。 A major, totally unique, out of left field twist, will ramp up the suspense to maximum。 While what follows might be stretching plausibility as over the top chaos ensues, Gardner nevertheless takes us on a wild and crazy, action-packed ride that many of her fans will love。With thanks to Grand Central Publishing via Netgalley for a copy to read。 This original review was first published in Mystery & Suspense Magazine https://www。mysteryandsuspense。com/st。。。 。。。more

I didn’t feel this was the usual thriller Lisa Gardner writes。 There were areas of the story that were stagnant。 The premise of the book was good but much of the story was not believable。 Frankie, an amateur sleuth, finds herself on a secluded Hawaiian island initially trying to rescue a 17 year old woman who was believed to be held involuntarily。 I received an arc of this book from NetGalley and the publisher。 All opinions expressed are my own。
